Andrzej Szewczyk

Andrzej Szewczyk (born in 1950 in Szopienice near Katowice, died in 2001 in Cieszyn) studied art education at the Silesian University (Cieszyn branch) from 1974 to 1978.

He was artistically active from the late 1960s. In his paintings, he denied the traditional role of the image and the painter as a creator. From the late 1970s, issues related to the recording of text—such as writing, books, and calligraphy—became central themes in his art. In 1977, he began exhibiting at the Foksal Gallery in Warsaw, with which he remained connected for over two decades. From 1981, he created compositions made of pencil shavings, wooden blocks glued to boards and canvases, and poured with encaustic, paint, and lead. He exhibited both in Poland and abroad. A permanent collection of his works is held at the Silesian Museum in Cieszyn.
